How to Photograph Monday's Eclipse with Your Smartphone

So in case you haven't heard about the eclipse happening on Monday, there's an eclipse happening Monday. So here's a few quick tips on how to take some pics and solar selfies...

1. You need to cover your phone's lens with some sort of solar filter or your eclipse glasses. Regular sunglasses WILL NOT WORK! If you're in the path of totality, you can take the filter off when the sun is completely covered, but that will be quick so be careful.

2. To minimize any shakiness, get a tripod to put your phone on. Even a cheap one helps.

3. If you don't have a solar filter, eclipse glasses, or a tripod, take pictures of the stuff going on around you during the eclipse... things like leaves will throw shadows of the eclipse on the ground. Also, it's always fun to take pictures of folks looking up at the sky with their mouths open.

4. Practice this weekend by taking photos just after sunset to get an idea of what the light levels will be like during the eclipse.

5. Keep your expectations low. Cameras on phones were meant for selfies, so don't expect AMAZING eclipse photos from your smartphone.
